The Oh! Zone Guide To Sex Toys

General Information

Selecting a Toy

Sex toys come in so many different sizes, textures, shapes and functions -- you could indulge yourself with one toy for each day of the week! A different sensation every time!!
To help you to find what you want or you think you need, perhaps you should consider the following questions:

:: What shapes appeal to you?

:: Do you find some sex toys too naff to look at?

:: Do you have a favourite colour?

:: Do you know what material you like most: Silicone or jelly? Rubber or plastic?

:: Do you want stay traditional or be adventurous?

:: Do you find difficult to relate penetration and orgasm?

:: Do you consider yourself to be "clitoral"?

:: Do you want to use your toy alone or share it?

:: Do you need extra "liquid" help?

There is no a correct answer to any of these questions! However, we hope you have an easier time selecting your new best friend if you give it some thought before you buy it.
We don't want your new sex toy to be thrown and forgotten in the back of the draw!!
Whichever toy you decide to buy and try, let your desires and pleasure be the guides. There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying, owning, using and loving sex toys!
Whether you use your toys alone or with a partner, you are enhancing and increasing your sex drive. Most importantly, you are keeping an open mind by trying new tools for your pleasure and discovering new things about you and hopefully learning and sharing with others. So, relax and enjoy yourself.

If you are to purchase a toy for you to play alone, it is important you consider what kind of stimulation you are looking for. If you are as kind as to share, is your partner female or male?

Choosing the Right Material

Firstly, we want you to know one important fact: there is no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to sex toys. It is all about personal taste. Some toys are right for you when you find pleasure and satisfaction using them; others are "wrong" for you in the way that they don't provide what you want and need from them.

However, when considering sex toy materials, "right" and "wrong" take on a new dimension: allergic reaction!!
If your body reacts with irritation, itching, rashes or burning, it could mean that you are probably allergic to the material your toy is made of, most often latex and some kinds of rubber. If you are considering the purchase of a new toy, take a moment to find out what it is made of, this way you can avoid an unpleasant reaction.
Sex toys can be made from just about anything, but most are manufactured from one of the following materials.

Silicone

Silicone is the ideal and most popular material within the sex toys. Lifelike with a soft, smooth texture, silicone quickly reaches and retains body temperature, making your sexual experience wonderfully warm and the closest to the real thing. No unpleasant edges, no snags or imperfections -- if you run your fingers over these toys, you might think you're touching real skin. Silicone also cleans up pretty well; it's non-porous, so you can easily wash your toys with soap and warm water without having to worry about having an allergic reaction.

Because you can boil silicone, sex toys made from this material can be fully sterilized, just make sure you clean them thoroughly between uses. In addition to being durable, silicone toys are nearly hypo allergenic; very rarely do people experience allergic reactions to them. The only drawback to this wonderful material is the price -- because silicone toys are hand-cast, they can cost significantly more than their rubber or jelly friends.

If you're looking for a high-quality, realistic toy that will last a long time, a Silicone toy could be the answer.

Jelly

Jelly sex toys can be nice, at nearly half the price of their silicone friends. Although they are not as smooth or silky as sex toys made from silicone, jelly toys can still bring you an enormous amount of pleasure. The secret is to use, water-based lubrication - the more the merrier. Usually you can find jelly toys in bright funky colours, crafted from a thick, translucent, flexible rubber that isn't as giggly as silicone. When you stroke a jelly toy with your finger, the tip is liable to stick or skid a little on the material. Another factor to consider is the smell of jelly, similar to warm plastic. Most people don't really mind it, but the ones with a sensitive smelling sense might care for the unnatural scent. You don't want to use soap or boiling water to clean your jelly toys, just warm water and a gentle touch. Unfortunately, this means these toys aren't safe to share unless you want to put a condom on them, but they're so inexpensive, that your partner could buy and own his or her own!

If you are looking for a smooth, good-quality toy at an affordable price, jelly sex toys could be the ones for you.

Rubber!

While silicone and jelly are wiggly and wonderful, most sex toys are made out of simple latex rubber. Slightly firmer than the silicone or jelly toys, rubber toys are still soft and somewhat flexible -- but nothing close to the real thing!! Regardless, latex rubber is very popular because of its low cost, versatility and resilience: it's cheap and it does the job just fine if you aren't too fussy and aware that after a while you will need a replacement.
Latex rubber toys wear out much faster than silicone or jelly toys. They are extremely porous making them very hard to clean properly, so no sharing without a condom. Some people are allergic to latex and can't use it at all. Rubber latex toys come in a wide range of colours, although "flesh-coloured" and black seem to be the most popular.

If you are looking for an inexpensive toy that is less likely to smell like chemicals, rubber latex might be your best choice.

Plastic

Plastic is the tough friend of the rubber sex toys: it is hard, cold and completely inflexible. Think traditional slim line. Since many plastic toys have a metallic silver exterior, they have the extra bonus of a sophisticated and high-tech design look. Another point to add, because the motor is encased in hard plastic instead of smooth rubbery material, you can really feel the vibrations. Plastic vibes aren't a top pick for internal use or in-out thrusting, but they make wonderful clitoral teasers. To clean it, soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and wipe down your toy. If you're nervous about bringing alcohol in contact with your sensitive genitalia, you can follow the alcohol wipe with a gentle water wipe-down.

Try a plastic sex toy if you like the sensation of cool metal and an intense vibration.

Glass

Yes, it might seem strange and the thought of danger might cross your mind, but Glass Dildos are growing to be one of the most popular toys, not only because they are beautiful but also safe. They are very strong, chip and scratch resistant, often made of Pyrex Glass. They are heat-treated and tested with high-tech equipment for possible cracks, scratches and other flaws.

They are a real work of art and they make a very special present!!
Handled with care, they could be the perfect lifetime companion. To be cleaned with warm water and mild soap.

Other Materials

CyberskinTM Also known as thermal plastic. Toys made from this material become warm with use and are the closest thing to skin-to-skin sensation you'll find in a sex toy. Cyberskin isn't considered to be as high end as silicone, but creating a lifelike material isn't cheap and the price of these toys reflects that.

Metal: Often used by S&M aficionados, metal toys are a less common material, but give the same sensation as plastic toys for the most part. Also used in PC muscle exercisers.

Vinyl: Similar to rubber, this inexpensive material is a favourite with fetishists.

Acrylic: It's firm texture makes acrylic perfect for PC muscle-strengthening toys. Acrylic Dildos are durable, easy to clean, and hard to damage. With a bit of TLC these toys could last you a lifetime.

Lucite: This hard material provides firm pressure, making it a favourite for prostate-stimulating toys.

Leather: Used for harnesses and restraints, many people find leather tough and sexy.

Care & Maintenance

The task of cleaning your sex toy it has to be added to your daily "do list".
Clean your products with alcohol or a gentle soap and warm water after every use -- for more information on how to clean specific materials, refer to Choosing the Right Material.
It would be a good idea to buy a bottle of specialist cleaner too.

We recommend you to remove the batteries when you are not using your toy. Batteries can leak, which it could be very messy and damage your toy. Likewise, when cleaning your toy, keep the motor and batteries away from water or alcohol.

If your notice any damages and changes on the texture of your toy after an "active" time, i.e., holes, cuts or nips- don't think about it, throw it away! Perhaps is time to get a replacement or try something new!

If you're the unselfish type and you're sharing your toys with a partner or using the same toy for both vaginal and anal use, be sure to clean your toy before passing it back and forth. If you don't want to take the time during love play to clean your toy, use a condom for hygiene and to avoid spreading sexually transmitted infections or bacteria, which can easily and quickly grow.
Germs and bacterias favourite activity is to Spread!! Don't help them!!

Lubrication!

Lubricants and oils aren't just for partner sex. Slicking up solo sex is one of the most common uses for lubricants, oils and lotions. Using lube during masturbation is safe, sensual and practical: you want your sex toys to slip and slide as much as possible. Just remember to make sure you're using a type of lube that's compatible with the toy you're using -- you don't want to hurt yourself or your sexy toys!

How to use Lubricants

Once again all depends of personal preferences.
If you do not want a very "messy" experience, we recommend you to apply a small amount onto your fingers and then spread it on your toy and yourself. Rub your fingers over the head and down the shaft, if your toy is a vibrator or Dildo. If you or your toy dries out, simply add more lube until you are fully satisfied!!

While an abundance of lubes are available in different colours, textures and flavours, lubricants come in four basic forms, and are intended for internal and external application in the anus and vagina.

Petroleum-Based Lubricant

Made from petroleum jelly, mineral oil or petrolatum, petroleum-based lubes are the most commonly used type of lubrication. Different types include Vaseline products and baby oil. As petroleum-based lubes destroy latex -- practically on contact -- they should never be used with condoms, diaphragms or cervical caps. Petroleum-based lubes stain fabric and can be difficult to wash out. Also, petroleum-based lubes tend to irritate the vagina, so they're not really the best option for women wanting to enjoy vaginal penetration. Petroleum-based lubes are great, however, for male masturbation and anal play.

Oil-Based Lubricant

Usually made from natural products, such as vegetable oils and nut oils, oil-based lubes tend to stain fabrics and can be difficult to wash off, but they are safe for use in the vagina. Oil-based lubes also destroy latex, so, like petroleum-based lubes, they should never be used with condoms, diaphragms or cervical caps. Oil-based lubricants are great for anal sex, vaginal intercourse, and male and female masturbation.

Water-Based Lubricant

Water-based lubricants typically contain de-ionised water, glycerine, propylene glycol and non-toxic preservatives. Although available in both flavoured and unflavoured mixtures, most unflavoured lubes still taste slightly sweet. Water-based lubes do not stain, are safe for use with latex and all other barrier birth control methods, and rarely cause irritation. While they often dry out during extended sex, water-based lubes are quickly revived with a spritz of water or a dollop of saliva. Because of their versatility and effectiveness, water-based lubes are the form of lube recommended most often by sex therapists and experienced couples.

Also one of the advantages of water based lube is the easy clean up. You can rinse it off with warm water. Done job, lube gone!! You must also be aware of a down-fall, if you are the owner of a waterproof toy, and you are going for a "water splash" with your toy, a water-based lubricant will rinse right off, turning into wasted lube!

If you are using a Silicone toy this type of lube is a must (unless is a waterproof one).

Silicone-Based Lubricant

Silicone-based lubricants are similar to water-based lubes with one notable difference: because they are silicone based, they are completely waterproof, making them ideal for underwater use. They also retain their lubricating properties better and longer than water-based lubricants, and are highly concentrated -- so a little goes a long way! Silicone will not harm latex as oil-based lubricants will do; however, silicone-based lubricants can harm sex toys made from silicone, so use a different lube when using your more expensive toys.

Silicone is made up of tiny glass beads, when rubbed together; they will scratch one another (like an exfoliator!) So keep away this type of Lube from your Silicone toy, or you are heading to disaster!

After using it on your toys and yourself, cleaning will take a little bit more time and effort. A good soapy warm wash will do the trick!

Whether you decide to try petroleum-, oil-, water- or silicone-based lubricants, remember the various restrictions that go along with each. To try is to know, there are a few different kinds so try with your lover so the two of you can experiment with different flavours, consistencies and textures.
If you don't find a lube you like right away, don't panic: there are about a zillion different kinds out there.

Communication and Respect

The secret to a happy healthy sex life is communication and respect. Consider this before you spring a new toy on your partner without pre-alert: he or she may run screaming from the room, never to be seen again. Talk about your fantasies and desires. Share your dreams with your lover. Make sure he or she is comfortable with playing with the selected sex toy before you introduce it to your shared space. If your partner does not approve, you can always use your toy on your own. But why not try broaching the subject? You might be gladly surprised.
